cold-for-california:

Another serious quidditch question, is tickling allowed?
You know those times where there a dogpile on the pitch and someone’s trying to get the quaffle and the beaters are running all over the place so there’s just a pile of people struggling in a clump? Can they tickle?

People can laugh all they want about quidditch “not being a real sport.” We had practice last night from 9 to 11, and I am generally sore everywhere. AND IT FEELS GREAT!

Name: Katie Schneider

Number: 25

Position: Beater

Year: Junior

Studying: Elementary Education

House: Gryffindor

HP Character: Hermione Granger

Spell: Accio, because I can never find things!

Patronus: A bluejay: they’re noisy, outgoing, and aggressive

Non-Rowling Book: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Non-Snipe Team: It’s so hard to choose, but I’m gonna have to go with Loyola, for giving me my first nickname during a match: Glimmer.

Your Quidditch Story:

Discovering Quidditch at the end of my sophomore year has completely changed my college experience. With my decidedly not nerdy major, I spent most of my first two years at IU trying to figure out where all the nerds were. Well, I found ‘em, and now I have a circle of absolutely fantastic friends who I get to go on a pitch and play a fun, intense game with. I love the family that this team has become, and can’t wait to see how we grow. To every single Snipe reading this: you have been a wonderful addition to my life and I am sincerely grateful to be a part of this team with you.

That last one of Katie is pretty good. She looks all “I am not taking any of your nonsense!”

Number: 11

Position: Beater

Year: Sophomore

Studying: Fashion Design and Studio Arts

House: Hufflepuff

HP Character: Fred and George Weasley

Spell: unsure

Patronus: also unsure

Non-Rowling Book: Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

Non-Snipe Team: Ball State Quidditch, while they can be pretty aggressive (maybe even overly aggressive sometimes), they are a very friendly team that plays hard and isn’t afraid to admit if they did something wrong. They have great sportsmanship and are a tough and hardworking team. I wish them the very best at the World Cup in the spring!

Your Quidditch Story: Coming into college, I was pretty depressed that I couldn’t really play any sports due to a knee injury that still has me stuck wearing a huge metal brace. But I still remember Onyx coming down the dorm hall telling all of us that there was a call out meeting for the quidditch team. At the time, I had no idea there even was a quidditch team, but who could I possibly say no to at least attending the call out meeting for a quidditch team?! As it turns out, the team was still in its beginning stages, and I am extremely happy that I got to help build this team up to what it is now and to what I know it can be in the future! I still remember meeting and getting to know all the eager faces, all the name games we played as we learned to catch and pass, and all the practices at Bryan Park while we tried to get officially accepted in IU. Quidditch has helped me not only meet some of the most amazing people I know, but it has also helped me get through a lot of stress and frustrations. Even more, it has let me get back into being an athlete in an atmosphere that’s accepting and uplifting. I absolutely love the little quidditch family we have become.

Gotta love my fellow beaters!

midnightsnipesquidditch:

A Year in Review: Boo boos

As many of you already know, quidditch is a very intense, physical, full-contact sport. Injuries are bound to happen, especially when quidkids can be very competitive by nature.

This year, we have encountered a total of three concussions, two shoulder injuries (one on pitch another off and a really embarrassing story), awkward falls, (surprisingly only) one nosebleed, toe injuries, busted lips, bruised sternums, several visits to the ER, and plenty of other minor bruises and scrapes along the way.

Needless to say, the Indiana University Midnight Snipes proudly wear their scrapes and bruises, although the more severe injuries have been worn more solemnly and given cause for us to question some of the safety regulations and the following thereof (here’s looking at you, metal hoops). At the end of the day, there will always be enthusiastic Snipes wanting to get a little roughed up in the name of Quidditch and we hope to have fewer injuries with every passing season.

Now enjoy photos of our injured players, you sick, sick sadists!

Name: Andy Luettgen

Number: 6

Position: Seeker/Snitch

Year: Ermagerd a Ferschmern!

Studying: Music Education

House: Gryffindor

HP Character: Seamus Finnigan. Props to the pyro.

Spell: Melofors. Because who doesn’t want to turn someone’s head in a pumpkin?

Patronus: A bear. That’s just how I attack my problems.
Non-Rowling Book: As the Crow Flies by Craig Alexander
Non-Snipe Team: Ball State. They are the definition of aggression and power in the Midwest, combined with skill to take them to the top. Also, Tyler Macy’s a BAMF, and I anxiously await a match with him where the snatch could decide the winner.

My Quidditch Story:

I started Quidditch in my high school back in Atlanta, and while we never played an IQA team, we had a lot of heated matches with our rival school that taught me a lot about the endurance strategies of the position. When I got to IU, I was perfectly prepared to build interest and start a team, only to realize that we had a team already prepped to enter their first year in IQA competition, but coincidentally minus a consistent seeker. Very quickly in practices, I established myself as a glutton for pain, after several times I would have overworked myself in a triathlon workout (and once a race) just before practice. Even though I don’t have days like that anymore, I still subscribe to a belief that, in order for me to be satisfied with my own improvement, I never hold anything back in my own training. While I have endless conflicts (frequently on tournament days) through the music department here, I look forward to putting down a solid 4 years with the Snipes and continuing to grow as an athlete as well as expanding the sport’s awareness as a whole. AIP!

He’s a Freshman and already a great seeker. I can’t wait to see what he’s like three years from now!

A Year in Review:

We’re experiencing a bit of a gap with members submitting player profiles right now. Something about finals week and other academic obligations. In the mean time, we also want to use a bit of photo-historiography to share our fall semester experiences with the blogverse. Today we have some pictures from the beginning of our first quidditch match EVER. Starting (going left to right) we have Caroline, Kelly, Griffin, Steven F, Max, Will, and Steven W. It was a really successful first match and a great way to kick off a season rife with ups and downs. The St. Mary’s ladies were charming and very sports(wo)manlike. Perhaps we’ll play against them again in the spring?

The weird thing tho is that the most common question I get asked when I tell people I play quidditch is “how do you fly?”

not “how do you play without flying” (which would actually make sense)

but how do you fly?

HOW DO YOU FLY

100% true.
